An apprenticeship is basically paid skills training, usually through a trade union. Trade school and organizations not affiliated directly with a union also offer similar training, though it might be unpaid or require a fee or tuition.

Decide on a construction trade you want to pursue as a career before you apply for a specific apprenticeship program to learn the required skills.  Check out local apprenticeship salaries and openings here as well as on VPS’s FutureMe.

Want to get an start early on a career in construction?  The BayACES program at Hudson’s Bay High School offers a sequence of courses in the building trades that lead to industry certification and preferred status with Northwest Laborers Employers Training Trust (apprenticeship opportunities).  Magnet applications for BayACES open in January.  Eagles (Bay students) can also see their counselors about getting into a Construction Trades course.
